Monetization Was Never Just a Paywall. Experiences Is Live.

    Introduction

For years the paywall has done one thing. A reader reaches their limit, a box appears, and they get a single question: pay, or leave.

It is the highest-intent moment on your entire site - someone is reading, engaged, right at the edge of a decision - and most publishers can only meet it with a yes or a no.

That was never the whole job. Monetization is everything you do with a reader's attention once you have earned it: how you welcome an anonymous visitor, what you offer someone about to lapse, how you reward the loyal ones, when you ask and when you give.

Today we are making that buildable. Experiences is live.

What it is

Experiences lets you design interactive moments anywhere in the reader journey and ship them in minutes - configured in the platform, not coded by your engineers, enforced at the edge so they load before the page does.

An offer, a game, a survey, a year-in-review, a share-to-unlock, a win-back for someone about to cancel. If you can describe the moment, you can build it, and you can change it the same afternoon you think of it.

That last part is the point.

Most of these ideas never shipped for one boring reason: each was an engineering ticket, scheduled behind everything else.

Experiences removes the ticket.

What people are already building

Some of the best examples are already coming from customers, days after getting their hands on it.

•       A “you've been selected” offer - about as simple a mechanic as exists.

•       A reader-recognition experience that rewards people for how much they read, then points them to what to read next.

•       A print-to-digital unlock - readers link an existing print subscription and get instant digital access, no support ticket needed.

And we haven't been able to stop building them ourselves.

•       A rainy-day free article, wired to a weather API, that unlocks a free read when it's actually raining where the reader is.

•       A “win an article” mechanic - roulette and share-to-unlock - that turns access into something readers play for.

Every one of these was built in hours, not sprints, because the moment was finally theirs to design.

Why now

The humans are getting harder to reach. The readers who do arrive are arriving less often: when one of Google's AI Overviews appears on a search, the share that ends in a click falls from 15% to 8%, and zero-click searches have risen from 56% to 69% in a year (Pew Research and Similarweb). The open web is sending you fewer people.

When every human visit is scarcer, you cannot afford to meet it with a single yes or no. You have to do more with the attention you have earned - engage it, reward it, convert it, keep it.

That is what Experiences is for.
